GDP and Migrant-Rights.org: Joint Submission to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention – Qatar

In a joint submission to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD), the GDP and Migrant-Rights.org highlight various concerns regarding the detention of migrants that the WGAD should address during its upcoming visit to Qatar. In particular, the submission highlights that fact that despite Qatar’s introduction of a new law in September 2018 stipulating that migrant workers no longer need permission from their employers to leave the country, the law foresees a number of exceptions and only covers persons under the labour law—thus leaving some 200,000 domestic workers vulnerable to arbitrary deprivation of liberty at the hands of their employers.
