NEWS & TESTIMONY

2026

"The first thing [Younouse Kone] noticed once he was in the Gjadër cage was the absence of a common area – no gym, no place to pass the time. "There was nothing, and we had no information, not even about our right to apply for asylum," he says. ... In one month in Gjadër, he witnessed two suicide attempts by "young men who tried to hang themselves from the bars of the cage we lived in." His cellmates protested by setting fire to a mattress and breaking the window."

2025

"The Italian government intends to use facilities it opened last October in Albania for the fast-track processing of asylum seekers into repatriation centers, after Italian courts repeatedly blocked the detention there of migrants rescued at sea."
