In 2024, the Trandum Supervisory Board reported that the detention centre "is too prison-like and that a lower degree of control should be implemented to reflect the fact that the basis for the detention is not the execution of sentences or crime. Furthermore, the Board finds that the routine locking of detainees in their respective cells is unlawful and that this practice must cease. Instead, the Supervisory Board finds it appropriate to practice a principle of unlocked doors, as is the case at the Märsta Immigration Detention Centre outside Stockholm. In connection with the ongoing review of the Regulations on the Trandum Immigration Detention Centre, the Supervisory Council asks the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to clarify that locking of cells is a restriction that can only be permitted when it is proportionate and necessary following a specific assessment.
