ABOUT

With capacity for 507 people, the Algeciras CIE is reported to be the largest in Spain. Its construction began in June 2021, and has cost approximately 25.3 million EUR (largely financed by European Mutual Aid and Assistance Funds). In November 2025, it was reported to have started receiving detainees as part of its "testing and trial phase." It was officially opened as per a government order in February 2026. Observers have denounced the establishment of the new facility, which occurred as the country adopted a massive regularisation scheme, arguing that it "reinforces the criminalizing view of migration and the normalization of deprivation of liberty for non-criminal acts as a common practice."
