A global network of migrants-rights organisations held a webinar to discuss best approaches for building on the the Global Compact for Migration’s Objective 13 on ensuring that immigration detention is used as a last resort and implementing alternative measures. The webinar is part of a free online certificate programme on the GCM that is aimed at focusing attention on emerging ideas and analyses since the adoption of the GCM in 2017, including the impact of the COVID pandemic and the regional reviews of the GCM that have taken place.

The webinar — jointly organised by the Cross-Regional Center for Refugees and Migrants (CCRM), Global Research Forum on Diaspora and Transnationalism (GRFDT), International Institute for Migration and Development (IIMAD), Metropolis Asia – Pacific (MAP), and Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) — had four invited panelists, including the Global Detention Project’s Michael Flynn.

  • Sumitha Shaanthinni Kishna – Our Journey (Malaysia)

  • Hannah Cooper – Europe Coordinator – International Detention Coalition
