Ahead of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention’s (WGAD) visit to Greece in December 2019, the GDP and the Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) have submitted information concerning the detention of migrants and refugees in the country. The submission outlines various key concerns, particularly regarding the new draft law on asylum, which “introduces extensive provisions for the applicants to be detained.” Noting various observers’ concerns regarding poor detention conditions, the GDP and GCR encourage the WGAD to pay particular attention to issues of overcrowding; hygiene; provision of clean bedding and clothes; adequate food; separation of women and men, as well as children from unrelated adults; sufficient lighting; freedom of movement within facilities; outdoors time; and recreation activities.
